The follow illustration tries to explain all the events involved in a heart which mitral valve cannot properly close. Lood returns to the atrium creating overload which means the heart will have to use additional power to pump all that out. At fist the heart deals with it, growing stronger and thicker, but later on it dilates and stops pumping strong enough. In the end a mitral issuficiency becomes a complte left ventricle failure with pulmonar congestion. Here, take a look:
